Calgary Quest: Empowering Students with Special Needs in Calgary

Calgary is home to numerous institutions dedicated to providing top-tier education for children with special needs. One standout is Calgary Quest, a private school where students thrive in a safe environment while developing academic, social, and essential life skills. In this article, brought to you by calgary1.one, we explore the school’s history and its vital role in the community.

The History of Calgary Quest

The Calgary Quest Children’s Society was founded in 1980 by a group of dedicated parents seeking a better future for their children with special needs. They established a unique community built on a philosophy of care and empowerment that continues to guide the school today.

In 1995, the society applied to the Alberta government for private special education school status. This transition turned Calgary Quest into a fully accredited institution committed to providing students with disabilities an education rooted in dignity and respect.

March 2024 marked another milestone with the opening of the new Sunalta campus. This innovative learning complex serves high school students and young adults with moderate to severe disabilities, focusing on fostering independence and the skills necessary for a fulfilling life in the community.

Further expansion followed in 2025, when the elementary and junior high programs moved to a new facility in Barlow. Located conveniently along the CTrain line, the new location offers easy access for families across the city.

Specialized School Programs

Calgary Quest offers specialized educational programs for children with moderate to severe developmental disabilities. Classes are intentionally kept small to ensure personalized attention for every student. Each classroom is led by a full-time certified teacher and supported by qualified educational assistants. The school also integrates various professional therapists:

  • Occupational therapists;
  • Speech-language pathologists;
  • Music therapists;
  • Behavioural strategists.

Classrooms are organized based on student abilities and individual needs. Regardless of age or grade level, the curriculum focuses on five core areas:

  • Communication;
  • Fine motor skills;
  • Self-care;
  • Social-emotional learning;
  • Life skills.

In the high school years, the curriculum continues to build on these foundations while shifting focus toward independence and the transition into adulthood.

The Quest Opportunity Centre

The Quest Opportunity Centre serves young adults aged 18 to 28 with cross-disabilities. It is a space where they can discover their strengths and achieve personal goals. The centre prioritizes continued education, skill-building, and personal growth, operating on the belief that every young person deserves the chance to reach their full potential.

Quest Adventure Camp

One of the school’s most exciting initiatives is the Quest Adventure Camp, an inclusive day camp designed for children and teens with developmental disabilities aged 6 to 19. The camp provides a safe and engaging atmosphere where participants of all ability levels can socialize, explore, and grow.

Each week features a new theme, plenty of outdoor activities, and lots of fun. Campers are grouped by age and support requirements. With a low staff-to-camper ratio, the school ensures that every child receives the care they need.

Enrollment at Calgary Quest School is not required to attend the summer camp; children of all backgrounds and abilities are welcome. While individual needs are assessed during the application process to ensure the best fit, the camp strives for maximum inclusivity while prioritizing the safety of both participants and staff.

Quest Adventure Camp is the perfect way to make summer fun, accessible, and rewarding for every participant.
